Chapter Received 2008 Gold Award
March PDM Review On
March 18th the APICS Apple Valley Chapter hosted their annual Top Management
night. Mr. Charles Daniels, Director for
Logistics, at Fortessa, a leading designer, global
developer and marketer of quality tableware for the
high- end
commercial foodservice and luxury consumer markets, led a discussion on Logistics
in the Current Down Economy. Mr. Daniels conducted an open forum centered around the
derivation and meaning of the term “Logistics” , the
impact of the current global economic downturn
and how Companies can leverage Logistics to cope
with it. Mr. Daniels advised that Logistics is
derived from the Greek word “Logos” which was the
ancient Greek military organization in charge of
Finances and Supplies. Today Logistics is associated with management of the flow and reverse flow
of goods, services, information and people
in support of a Company’s business
operations. It is the management of the “end to end”
supply chain and encompasses transportation, commodity design and product maintenance as well as supply. Outside factors such as natural and man-made disasters, fuel costs,
supplier disruption, labor and Governmental unrest
etc. all impact on Logistics. Mr. Daniels led the group in identifying the factors impacting
today’s economy and in identifying logistics
opportunities such as supply chain optimization and
product design to minimize total life cycle costs
that Logisticians can leverage into
opportunities to enhance their Company’s future business competitiveness. ****** February PDM
Review On February 17th the APICS Apple Valley Chapter joined with the American Society
for Quality Northern Shenandoah Valley to host a
Professional Development Meeting
featuring Dr. Bettina Fiery R.N., Northern Valley
Hospital Director for Organizational
Development. Dr. Fiery spoke on the Contextual Influences Affecting Transformational
Leadership in Northwest Virginia Multiple Nonprofit Hospital Systems. Dr. Fiery addressed the quantitative study she conducted on the
disparity between the supply and demand of Registered Nurses (RN) in two northwest satisfaction and
retention. Dr. Fiery stated that 40%
of nurses surveyed report job
dissatisfaction and one in three indicated
they plan to leave nursing. Dr. Fiery focused on transformational
Leadership which she defines as the ability to help followers
reach self-actualization and transcend self-interests by
use of the following techniques: idealized
influence (charisma), inspirational motivation,
intellectual stimulation and individual
consideration. She surveyed 68 leaders
at these hospital systems
in three different
management levels:
president, vice president and nursing leader. Her study concluded that the many rapid changes impacting today’s
health care industry requires frequent and
ongoing organizational transformation which places significant stress on RNs and leads to job
dissatisfaction. Adoption and development of
transformational leadership skills will provide the leaders the
capability to address these stresses and increase
RN satisfaction and retention. Although
Dr. Fiery’s presentation focused on health care and nursing,
the takeaway for the APICS Apple Valley chapter attendees is that we all operate in a rapidly changing job
environment and that transformational leadership
skills will help us develop and retain a satisfied work
force dedicated to achieving organizational success. Apple
